About

The California State Teachers' Retirement System (CalSTRS) is a public pension fund providing retirement, disability and survivor benefits to California's public school educators and their beneficiaries. It was established by law in 1913 to serve educators from prekindergarten through community college, and today covers more than 1 million educators. Its investment assets totalled approximately $417.7 billion as of 30 September 2026, spread across categories including public equity, fixed income, real estate, private equity and inflation-sensitive assets. CalSTRS is administered by a 12-member Teachers' Retirement Board, which sets policy and makes rules for the system. It publishes its portfolio holdings by investment type and regularly seeks external managers for publicly traded securities.
