About
BankAxept is Norway's national debit card payment scheme for card payments at physical points of sale. The BankAxept brand dates to 1990, with roots in the ATMs rolled out in Norway in the late 1970s and the payment terminals introduced in the early 1980s. Merchants accept BankAxept through a payment terminal and an acquiring agreement with their bank, with settlement to their account the next day. Services include contactless payments, a backup payment solution, pre-authorisation, returns, and cash withdrawals and deposits at the till. BankAxept is provided by Stø AS, formerly BankID BankAxept and renamed in May 2025, which is wholly owned by Vipps Holding AS.
