About

The Australian Banking Association (ABA) is the industry association for banks in Australia, with a membership of 20 banks that includes the four major banks, regional banks and international banks holding an Australian banking licence. It works with government, regulators and other stakeholders on public policy affecting banking, and its stated priorities include scams, payments modernisation, Confirmation of Payee, surcharging, access to banking and cash, and financial hardship support. Its site hosts the Banking Code of Practice alongside industry guidelines, policy submissions, and data on lending, payments and bank financials. The ABA is governed by a Council made up of the chief executives of member banks and has been led by CEO Simon Birmingham since August 2025. The organisation traces its history to the late 1940s, and since 2019 has offered associate membership to organisations in the wider banking ecosystem.
